    History of Rameshwaram

Rameswaram's history is primarily rooted in the Hindu epic Ramayana, where it is depicted as the place where Lord Rama worshipped Shiva before building the bridge (Ram Setu) to Lanka to rescue Sita. It is also a sacred site for Shiva worship, home to a Jyotirlinga installed by Rama, and is a prominent pilgrimage destination for both Vishnu and Shiva devotees. The Ramanathaswamy Temple is its central religious and historical landmark.

    • Lord Rama's connection: According to the Ramayana, Rameswaram is where Lord Rama and his army prepared to cross to Lanka. He worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a lingam on the island, which is now enshrined in the Ramanathaswamy Temple.
    • Ram Setu: It is the location from which the Ram Setu, or Adam's Bridge, was built to cross to Sri Lanka. This bridge was constructed by the Vanara army under the guidance of Nala and Nila using stones with "Rama's name" written on them.
    • Holy wells: Legend states that Lord Rama created 22 holy wells (kunds) with his arrows to quench the thirst of his army after the battle with Ravana.
    • Ramanathaswamy Temple: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples, making it a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus. It is also a Char Dham site.
    • Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple: Another important site is the Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple, which features a large idol of Lord Hanuman with five heads.
